I’m gonna try to do a new home tour here, room by room. Very little rooms are done at this point but, with the help of craigslist, I am getting there. Baby steppin’.
Our kitchen is my favorite room in the house. I adore it. I love to cook, and bake, and entertain, and it’s where we spend much of our days. It is truly better than I could have even imagined. Because we remodeled with a rehab loan (read more here), I literally got to pick out all the things for the kitchen, which is insane, yes. I let my husband pick the appliances, since I am such a giver, and I told him I will take reign of the rest of the house, I mean kitchen. What?
I know that white is all the rage and I, maybe, had one little anxiety attack that I chose the wrong color cabinets, before they were installed. BUT THEN THEY WERE INSTALLED and the hallelujah chorus did their thing.
The truth is, I am a white cabinet lover. It’s clean and crisp and modern, and all the things I love. But the other thing is: I am a dirty person with four kids. Do I need to say more? I had white cabinets at our first house and I am fully loving-embracing-celebrating my new wood cabinets. I made the right decision here, that is for sure. The cabinets are warm and classic and beautiful and make this kitchen what it is.
Some may some I like pinterest a little bit. Of all the dreamy kitchens I ever pinned, one always stuck out in my mind. I told my husband this, please. Kiss kiss. And he loves me even more after laying all that subway tile. Dontcha, babe?

What dirty floors?
Dimmers. I love dimmers and was high maintenance in requesting these in every room of our house, I know. But guess who’s thanking me for them now? Ahem.
We refinished the floors by sanding them, staining them a medium brown, and they have a satin poly finish. They are the original red oak flooring from our beloved 1942 house. The kitchen cabinets are a natural cherry with a brown glaze. I chose a bright white Corian solid surface countertops and traditional white subway tile with charcoal grout.
Our contractor custom made the shelving to match the cabinets and hung them with a stainless steel square tube, hung from the ceiling. He also made the fridge enclosure and installed under shelf lighting. This lighting is stellar, you guys. It is a continuous led flexible tape with a peel and stick back, on a dimmer switch, of course.
We added in recessed lighting, a farmhouse sink, and all our appliances are all from Lowes.
And there it is! The first official glimpse into this place we love calling home.
