Hi there! I’m Maggie and I’m the designer/sewer of Gussy Sews, a blog and shop filled with ruffled accessories. My blog is filled with inspirational stories on how I quit my day job to pursue a dream, married life :] and of course shop updates on my ruffles. I started blogging 2.5 years ago. Zack and I had been married 1 month and he thought it would be fun if I blogged. Shortly after marriage we both lost our jobs due to Michigan’s poor economy, and about 7 months later we left Michigan and headed for Minneapolis, MN for work. Shortly after moving to Minnesota I left the job we moved here for to pursue Gussy Sews full-time. You can read all about our whirlwind journey here :]
Zack and I met in college — we were both freshman at Central Michigan University. It was pretty much love at first sight ♥. Zack and I had mutual friends and often saw each other around campus. At the time, Zack was singing in an all-male a capella group, and he wooed me with his fun personality. OK, and great smile :]
I knew I loved Zack after about 2 months of dating — just writing that brings back the butterflies. Zack and I have always tried our best to put Christ first in our relationship. We were {and still are} great friends… knowing each others love language and making sure to do things that are important to the other one kept our relationship super strong. Because we were in college, most of our dates were suuuuper inexpensive, but we found ways to be creative with this.
Two years after dating, Zack proposed. He surprised me by visiting at my parent’s summer cottage. Our families live 3 hours apart and summers were always hard for us to be a part. Helloooooo, I missed that great smile! Zack proposed the weekend of the 4th of July, which is also my birthday weekend {July 5, baby!} It was one of the most magical and fun evenings/weekends of my life. It meant so much that my family was involved on the surprise, too :]
Our marriage is based on a foundation of Christ, friendship and fun. When we lost our jobs after just 7 months of marriage we didn’t skip a single beat. The hardest part of that experience was finding new jobs — thank goodness, right?!
One of the most memorable parts of our wedding was when my pastor asked us, What is 6 + 7 + 8 (we were married on June 7th, 2008)? The answer is 21, two become one.
I just love that! I feel like that motto solves every “issue” — we are a TEAM here, we WANT to be together, we LOVE each other and God. Marriage is a gift and with these three elements it’s impossible to not absolutely enjoy it to the max.
xxoo.

Maggie, after browsing your blog, one of the things that stuck out most to me was your "how i quit my job" post. it's something husband and i would like to work on in the near future, and it's so good to see others work at it. it seems so easy for some people, and it's going to take major adjustments (and paying off debts) to get there for us.
thanks for the encouragement!

Love your love story, Maggie!
There is something special about June 6…it's your anniversary, a friend of mine's birthday, and also the date of when I was "officially" saved (back in 2003). Love it!

I love your numbers. LOVE IT. We picked our wedding date (the 26th) because we began dating and got engaged on 12-14, which equals 26. Hubs thought of that. Bless him.
